The vines of Mas Lou in the AOP Faugères are located in Fos, a small commune nestled at the foot of the Cévennes.
The vineyard ranges from 200 to 400 meters in altitude. This semi-altitude location gives our wines freshness and finesse, two essential characteristics of our production. The schist soils also give a lot of personality to the Faugères wines. They reveal characteristic mineral and empyreumatic notes that enhance the sensation of freshness.
The clay-limestone terroir of the Côtes de Thongue is located in Olivier's homeland, in Tourbes, a small village near Pézenas. The vines are cultivated according to organic farming principles.
Our Faugères wines, from a terroir that is both high and schistous, often surprise tasters. They are far from the typical southern wines with sometimes heavy and jammy notes. Here, flint, graphite, and small red fruits dominate the aromatic profile. Our Côtes de Thongue wines, on the other hand, find their uniqueness in the freshness of the fruit and a lovely texture on the palate.
The vineyard planting is traditional, mainly composed of Syrah and old Carignan vines, with a smaller proportion of Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Lledoner Pellut, an ancient Languedoc grape variety.
The white grape varieties are Viognier, Vermentino, Grenache Blanc, and Roussanne.
These typically Mediterranean grape varieties are perfectly suited to our schist terroir with its arid climate. They withstand the intense summer drought typical of our region, preventing maturity blockages that could lead to more rustic wines. Thanks to their unique ability to resist water stress, these grape varieties continue to thrive throughout the summer, producing wines with round and silky tannins.
The average age of the vines is 33 years. This factor was crucial to our decision to settle here, as only age can provide the vines with the natural balance needed to produce wines with powerful yet elegant concentration, and a fine and complex bouquet.
